CATRIN has once again prepared a program for schools as part of the Academy of Sciences Week
This year, CATRIN at Palacký University is offering visitors guided tours of selected laboratories, competitions, and experiments as part of the Academy of Sciences Week outreach event. The organizers have prepared a program tailored specifically for groups of pupils, with the event kicking off today with an excursion for students from Masaryk secondary grammar school in Příbor.
“We come here regularly and have always had good experiences with the excursions. We always learn a lot of new things and complement the knowledge that students learn at school,” said a teacher Iveta Ulčáková.
Classes could choose from three excursions entitled From Nanoparticles to Fireflies, From Nanoparticles to Plants, and Biotechnology and Nanotechnology in Practice. Today, CATRIN employees gave them a tour of the microscopic facilities and explained what types of microscopes they use and for what purposes. At CATRIN-Bio, they learned about modern methods of plant genome editing and how scientists at CATRIN use them. The students became scientists for a moment and isolated DNA from a banana.
“It was great because I got to try a very fun experiment and learned a lot of interesting things. I can recommend it to everyone,” said a senior Jakub Macek, who participated in the Academy of Sciences Week program for the first time.
