CATRIN-MAT
CATRIN-MAT is one of the three research divisions of the Czech Advanced Technology and Research Institute (CATRIN) at Palacký University Olomouc. It focuses on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of chemistry, material science, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and biomedicine.
CATRIN-MAT researchers are developing new functional materials, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, innovative catalysts, biosensors, and solutions for environmental protection and sustainable energy. CATRIN-MAT is among the world’s pioneers in the field of single-atom engineering, which enables the targeted design of materials with precisely defined properties at the atomic level. The center’s researchers have achieved a number of internationally recognized results, for example in the development of graphene materials, atomic catalysts, nanomaterials for energy storage, biosensors for rapid diagnostics, and water purification technologies. Their discoveries are regularly published in the world’s most prestigious scientific journals, and many of them find application in industrial practice through patents, licenses, and spin-off companies.
The center has long collaborated with leading universities, research institutions, and industrial partners from the Czech Republic and abroad. Thanks to its modern research facilities and involvement in prestigious international projects—including those of the European Research Council (ERC) and the European Innovation Council (EIC)—it fosters an environment conducive to groundbreaking scientific discoveries and their translation into practical applications.
CATRIN-MAT is home to a number of prominent scientists, including Michal Otyepka, a four-time recipient of prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grants, and Radek Zbořil, who has repeatedly been named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate.
The center builds on the experience and achievements of the Regional Center for Advanced Technologies and Materials (RCPTM), which was founded in 2010 and became part of CATRIN in 2020.
