Biostimulant Developed in Olomouc Heads for the European Market Through Exclusive Licence to UK Company

A biostimulant that promotes the growth and vitality of cereal crops, developed by researchers at Palacký University Olomouc and protected by a European patent, is set to reach farmers across Europe. INTRACROP, a UK-based company operating through a network of local distributors, has secured the exclusive licence to commercialise the technology. The licensing agreement is expected to generate revenues for the University in the millions of Czech crowns.

The agreement is the result of many years of research and close collaboration between the University’s scientists and the British company. Until now, INTRACROP has focused primarily on foliar biostimulants applied as sprays. However, the company has successfully tested the Olomouc-developed compound as a seed treatment.

“Applying the compound as a seed treatment significantly reduces the amount required while offering farmers a much simpler method of application. Our biostimulant helps plants make more efficient use of available nutrients, particularly nitrogen. This can reduce fertiliser consumption, providing economic benefits for farmers while also making another significant contribution to more sustainable agriculture,” said Jaroslav Nisler, the principal inventor of the technology from the Czech Advanced Technology and Research Institute (CATRIN) at Palacký University Olomouc.

“The licensing agreement represents a major achievement in technology transfer and the commercialisation of research results at Palacký University. It demonstrates that innovations developed at Czech universities can successfully find their way onto international markets,” said Lukáš Spíchal, co-inventor of the technology from CATRIN.

INTRACROP plans to incorporate the technology, known as TFU, into its product portfolio designed to enhance plant growth and vitality. To date, the company has conducted more than 80 field trials across Europe, primarily on cereal crops, achieving an average yield increase of 0.32 tonnes per hectare. It is also exploring further applications for the technology.

“This year, we will be conducting trials focused on improving phosphorus use efficiency. Phosphorus plays a crucial role in the development and growth of root systems, making it particularly important for farmers. This year, trials are also taking place outside Europe, including in Australia and Canada. Although the patent is currently valid only in Europe, we expect to market the technology beyond European markets as well,” said Mark Palmer of INTRACROP.

Biostimulants help improve a wide range of key crop characteristics. They increase productivity, help mitigate the effects of adverse environmental conditions, and support more sustainable farming practices. They can also contribute to addressing broader challenges, including improving soil quality and promoting biodiversity.
